Land Development Plan Update
Welcome to the
portal to information on the current land development plan update! Use this website as your tool for information on meetings, public hearings and status reports.
We are excited to be going through this process and looking to Arlington’s future over the next 20 years. The last plan update was in 2001. Because Arlington has grown a great deal since that time, Mayor Wiseman thought it was time to revisit the plan to make sure it remains current and correctly addresses the manner in which the Town’s future growth should take place.
What is a land development plan?
Also called a land use plan, the land development plan is a guide for future development, providing a basis for rational decisions regarding zoning, subdivision control, redevelopment, and related issues. It represents goals and policies to guide and direct growth in Arlington over the next 20 years, by identifying goals and the methods by which those goals will be achieved.
The plan should not be confused with the zoning ordinance and zoning map. The land development plan is a “general” policy document that guides community growth and development decisions for property within the municipal limits, as well as those in the reserve area. The Zoning Ordinance and associated zoning map are legal instruments that define with significant precision the permitted land uses and bulk regulations for every property within a municipal jurisdiction.
The plan will guide residential, commercial, industrial and open space development, as well as consider transportation and environmental factors of development in the Town.
Subcommittee meetings
A Land Development Plan Update Subcommittee has been formed to review the plan and make recommendations on changes. The subcommittee meets the third Monday of each month at Town Hall, following the Planning Commission. Each meeting will begin no earlier than 7:00.
How can you participate?
All subcommittee meetings are open to the public to hear the discussion of the subcommittee. Public hearings will be scheduled in the coming months. Continue to visit the website for more information. We encourage the public’s interest in our plan update, and welcome any comments or questions during this preliminary review stage. We also look forward to hearing your input at our public hearings.
