A native of Tupelo, Mississippi, Mr. Lamar moved to Arlington in 1997. He served on the Health & Safety Committee from 1999 to 2003. He also started the Neighborhood Watch Program in Arlington and conducted National Night Out for three years. He was appointed as an Alderman in 2002 and re-elected to the position in the 2003 and 2007 municipal elections. Mr. Lamar also serves as the Vice-Mayor for Arlington.
Family: Pat (wife of 45 years), retired registered nurse, worked as one of the first nurses at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and worked for more than 20 years as a school nurse in the Shelby County School system, now teaching CPR and First Aid classes; 3 grown daughters - Lisa, Leah, and Lara; 4 grandchildren
Career: Retired from Southwest Tennessee Community College in 2001 (formerly State Technical Institute at Memphis) as a Dean and Professor of Accounting and Computers; taught at the college for 33 years; served 39 years in the Mississippi National Guard, United States Air Force, and the Tennessee National Guard.
Civic: Alderman, Town of Arlington, 2002 to present; Vice-Mayor, 2003 to 2007; member of Finance Committee; 2003 Graduate of Shelby County Sheriff's Department Citizens Academy; President of Parkway Village Jaycees in 1968; active in Data Processing Management from 1972 to 1977; board member for the Arlington Chamber of Commerce
Religion: Member of Central Church in Memphis for 31 years; has served as an usher for 25 years; coached girls softball and lead Bible study groups
Education: M.Ed. in Business Education and Accounting, Memphis State University, 1972; B.B.A. in Industrial Management and Accounting, 1965; certified Data Processor, 1976; certified Data Educator, 1979
Hobbies: Playing tennis, boating, and travel
Misc: Mr. Lamar's goals for Arlington include: Balanced growth (residential, commercial, industrial); Fiscal responsibility; Have a plan for future roads, fire protection, police protection, library, sewer, parks, swimming pools and Arlington for the Arts.
